Title: God’s Jail

13.08.14/ In the ex-Penitentiary of Santiago, dark liquids leak from the barred gates. A cloud of humidity reins over the facility and the peeling paint is evidence of its abandonment. But, in the penitentiary center’s “Calle 4” it’s a different world: 252 prisoners standing and organized into rows pray and sing with their hands in the air along a corridor of cells. They have gotten up at 6:00 am to do the cleaning and wash their clothes in turns. They spend the entire morning in workshops held in the same hallway, with the smell of air freshener. The walls are recently painted, the bathrooms are new, and they installed the ceramic tile and laminate flooring themselves.

For the prison guards, outnumbered by the prison population to the tune of 70%, the evangelicals are a solution for communal living inside the facility. For the rest of the prisoners, they are “those that hide behind the Bible”.
