“Carnaval San Pedro de Atacama”

San Pedro de Atacama, como muchas comunidades del Norte de Chile, celebra su Carnaval. Abrir un espacio para la fiesta y agradecer las bondades de la naturaleza, resulta primordial aquí. Celebrar a la tierra cada brote de vida es urgente y tal costumbre se instaló profundamente en la concepción del mundo que poseen los atacameños, representados en este reportaje por los Ayllus Coyo y Yaye. El origen del carnaval se pierde en la memoria como todas las cosas que tienen un origen mágico. Existe desde antes de la llegada de los españoles. Unos y otros elementos se mezclan en armonía y en confrontación. Comparten un espacio en el imaginario colectivo y se expresan de tal manera, que juntos forman un cuadro que es el registro vital del habitante atacameño.

“The Carnaval of San Pedro de Atacama”

San Pedro de Atacama, like many communities in northern Chile, celebrates Carnaval. Creating an opportunity to celebrate and give thanks to nature’s bounty is important here. Praising the Earth for every instance of life is imperative and is a custom that is deeply rooted in the world concept shared by the Atacamans, represented in this report by Ayllus Coyo and Yaye. The beginnings of carnaval are lost in time like all things of magic origin. It existed before the arrival of the Spanish. Different elements mixed in harmony and in confrontation. They share a space in the collective imagination and express themselves in such a way, that together they form a picture that is the vital register of the Atacaman inhabitant.
