“El pasado es un lugar”

Puente Alto es una comuna ubicada en las afueras de Santiago de Chile. Un lugar donde aún se puede tener contacto con el horizonte natural y también uno de los lugares más poblados de la capital, con altos índices de desempleo, drogas, delincuencia y abandono estatal. En este lugar viví hasta los 16 años, cuando mis padres se divorciaron y perdimos nuestra casa, mudándonos a la de mis abuelos en otro sector de la ciudad. Aun así, no pude abandonar este barrio por completo y seguí asistiendo a la misma escuela para permanecer cerca de mis amigos. Toda mi historia está ligada a este lugar; mis recuerdos, mis frustraciones y mis afectos. Mi familia ha crecido, vivido y trabajado allí. En 2013, mi padre murió allí y ese día volví a ver a mi abuela, después de casi nueve años, en esa casa congelada en el tiempo, con el mismo olor, el mismo polvo y la misma falta de luz que recuerdo de niño. El eterno letargo de las calles del barrio sólo se interrumpe por algún suceso criminal o alguna fiesta. Me resulta imposible hablar del presente sin revisitar este pasado, un ejercicio que puede resultar dañino pero también revelador, como si cada vez que me asaltara la falta de pertenencia tuviera que buscar en mi cabeza imágenes de este lugar para sentirme presente. “The past is a place.”

Puente Alto is a commune located in the outskirts of Santiago of Chile. A place where you can still be in touch with the natural horizon and one of the most inhabited places of the capital city, with high rates of unemployment, drugs, delinquency, and state neglect. I lived in this place until the age of 16 when my parents got divorced and lost our house moving to our grandparents’ house in another sector of the city. Even so, I couldn’t abandon that neighborhood completely and I stayed in the same school to stay near my friends. My whole story is closely linked to this place: my memories, my frustrations, and my affections. My family has grown, lived, and worked there. In 2013, my father died there, and, on that day, I saw my grandmother again, after almost nine years, in that house frozen in time, with the same smell, the same dust, and the same lack of light that I remember from my childhood. The eternal lethargy of the streets in the neighborhood is only interrupted by some criminal activity or some party. I find it difficult to speak about the present without revisit this past, an exercise that might be harmful, but also revealing, as if every time I feel the lack of a sense of belonging, I had to search inside my head images of this place to feel present. Fotógrafo documental y cofundador de Buen Lugar Ediciones, una iniciativa editorial independiente que publica libros y zines de fotografía. Desde el 2014 hasta el 2016, fue parte del Mentor Program de la Agencia VII. Ha sido galardonado con premios, residencias y becas provenientes de diferentes organizaciones tales como Magnum Foundation, Picture of The Year (POY Latam), Mast Grant For Photography (Italia), Open Society Foundations (USA), Photographic Museum of Humanity, FotoVisura (USA), PhotoEspaña, Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes (Chile), Festival Images Singulières (Francia), Festival Internacional de Fotografía en Valparaíso (FIFV, Chile), Premio Rodrigo Rojas Denegri (Chile) y 15 veces ganador en el Salón Nacional de Fotoperiodismo (FotoPrensa) incluyendo la Fotografía del Año en 2017. Es protagonista de los documentales “Rectángulo en el Ojo” sobre fotógrafos chilenos contemporáneos (www.rectanguloenelojo.cl), y “A Conscious Dream”, realizado por “Photographic Museum of Humanity” (www.phmuseum.com). En 2021, su proyecto “La Eternidad del mañana” sobre violencia policial hacia niños y jóvenes mapuche fue nominado al video del año y ganador del segundo lugar del concurso World Press Photo.

Documentary photographer and co-founder of Buen Lugar Ediciones, an independent editorial initiative publishing books and photo zines. From 2014 to 2016, he was part of the Mentor Program of Agencia VII. He has been awarded prizes, residencies and fellowships from different organizations such as Magnum Foundation, Picture of The Year (POY Latam), Mast Grant For Photography (Italia), Open Society Foundations (USA), Photographic Museum of Humanity, FotoVisura (USA), PhotoEspaña, National Council for the Arts and Culture (Chile), Festival Images Singulières (France), International Photography Festival in Valparaíso (FIFV, Chile), Award Rodrigo Rojas Denegri (Chile) and 15 times winner in the National Photojournalism Exhibition (FotoPrensa) including the Photo of the Year in 2017.
