“Al calor de la leña”

Humo de leña sale de las chimeneas de las casas a la orilla del río. El 95% de las viviendas del centro sur de Chile usan leña para calefaccionar las viviendas, cocinar, calentar agua y secar ropa. Es comprada principalmente en el mercado informal, lo que permite la tala ilegal y el poco control sobre su contenido de humedad.

Smoke from firewood comes out of chimeneas of houses along the banks of the river. Some 95% of houses from the southern central Chile use firewood to heat their homes, cook, heat water and dry clothes. It is mainly purchased on the informal market, allowing for illegal cutting and little control over its moisture levels.

A documentary photographer focused on long-term projects, Fernando has worked as a correspondent for agencies Corbis, Getty Images and Nur Photo. He won the 2013 Human Rights Photography Prize and First Place in the Portrait Report category in FotoPrensa 2016, with the project “Portraits of Memory” (“Retratos de la Memoria”). In 2017, he won Second Place in the category Sports–Series in the prestigious documentary photography competition Picture of The Year (POY Latam). His work has been published in TIME Magazine, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, Holanda Hoogte BV, Stichting Global Voices, the New York Daily, L’Humanité, Bayard-La Croix, The Huffington Post, Unikornis, Deutsche Welle, Le HuffPost (Argelia), DPA International and ESPN.
